Scholarships

You may have heard that there's a scholarship out there for everyone, and in reality that's not too far off. There are loads of scholarships that you can apply for and take advantage of, so long as you are willing to put in a little time and work up front. All require an application, and most will require an essay of some sort. It's absolutely worth the effort to get one or two scholarships because they can really go a long ways towards paying for college. In some cases a scholarship can pay for your college expenses entirely.
There are scholarship opportunities all around you. As the video mentions, there are three main areas to go looking for scholarships:

  • Your College
  • Your Community
  • Online

Go to your college's website, and talk to an adviser from the college about what scholarships are offered through the school. Look for opportunities to get involved in extra curricular activities and volunteer within your community. Then, leverage those experiences by finding the scholarships where that kind of involvement is valued. Finally, just by scouring the Internet, you will be able to find vast amounts of scholarships that you can apply for.

FAFSA

For almost all students today it is critical that you fill out the FAFSA. Doing so opens doors to financial aid that are extremely beneficial when it comes to paying for college. The fist benefit you'll notice are grants. Grants are fantastic because they don't have to be paid back. You'd be surprised what kind of grants you will qualify for by simply filling out the FAFSA. The second opportunity available from filling out the FAFSA is work study. This program is great, because the leg work is done for you. You will be notified of potential positions for which you can apply, making the job search that much easier. Finally, you will be eligible to get federal student loans. While these will have to be paid back in time with interest, they make it possible for many people to go to college, get a degree, and enter the field of their choice. Loans should be the last approach for paying for college, and you should ensure you have a solid plan for how you will pay them back before taking them out.
