Remembering Success in 2017

As we near the end of another year it's a great time for us to look back upon all the successes USU STARS! GEAR UP experienced this year. We had many engaging summer camps that allowed our amazing GEAR UP scholars to expand their knowledge and skill sets, preparing for their futures in the realm of STEM. In addition to these camps we had many other successful events such as Greenpower and the NASA Downlink where students participated in the once in a lifetime opportunity of conversing directly to astronauts aboard the International Space Station. Other successes include professional development activities for our teachers and site coordinators, as well as the expansion of USU STARS! GEAR UP to include a third cohort. This means we can positively impact another generation of students as they progress through high school and on to college.

Thank you to all the educators who help make these events possible for GEAR UP scholars. Thank you to the parents who allow and encourage their students to participate. Most of all, thank you to the GEAR UP scholars who are investing their time and energy in improving themselves and preparing for bright futures. We hope you see how much you've improved. Take a look at the videos below to see some of the highlights from 2017.

App Camp

App Camp was comprised entirely of aspiring female GEAR UP scholars interested in learning how to code. At the camp the students were introduced to coding by developing their very own Android applications, among a variety of other activities.

Transition Camp

This camp was meant to help students successfully transition into high school. At the camp they were introduced to new people and engaged in a number of team building exercises. They also attended a variety of workshops which enhanced and developed their critical thinking and study skills.

Engineering Camp

Students involved with this year's Engineering Camp were able to learn the intricacies of Civil Engineering as it applies to the management and distribution of clean water. Students learned how to test the potability of water and toured two water treatment facilities in Cache Valley.

Data Camp

Data management and analysis is a growing field with an incredible outlook for the future. Students who attended this camp were able to ask questions they were interested in and use data analysis to find an objective, and sometimes unexpected, answer to their questions.

Greenpower Event

GEAR UP's annual Greenpower Event is one that takes months of preparation on the part of the students involved. Teams from each school designed and built an electric car over the course of several months and this event is the culmination of all their hard work.

NASA Downlink

USU STARS! GEAR UP scholars had the unique opportunity of asking questions to astronauts aboard the International Space Station. It was an inspiring event for all those involved and demonstrated for the students the incredible results we can achieve when STEM principles are practically applied.
